Jeremy Geffen was a viola student of Donald McInnes's, but had to quit playing because of a physical problem with his hand. Jeremy then brought his personal skills to orchestral management, first as associate artistic administrator of the Aspen Music Festival and currently as artistic administrator of the New York Philharmonic. Jeremy played viola because he really enjoyed making music with other people, and he still loves working with others to create something larger than himself.

Those colleagues who have chosen to contribute to the musical product through their roles in management share a role similar to the violist's. While their individual part is not necessarily seen or heard in the same capacity as the first violinist or a piano soloist, their supportive actions make it possible for a great concert to take place. They have the personal satisfaction of knowing that without their help in contracting musicians and soloists, arranging sufficient rehearsals for the preparation of the music, ensuring that the pacing of these rehearsals and the pieces being rehearsed are not overtaxing to some of the players, managing personal conflicts with musicians, directing stagehands, and, most important of all, promoting the concerts and securing an audience, there would be no program and no music. When the audience is thrilled at hearing a wonderful program, the management stands proud knowing they made the event possible. Jeremy Geffen compares his management role to playing the viola:

In many ways what I do as an artistic administrator is similar to the role I had while I was playing chamber music. I work with a music director, an executive director, an orchestra and guest conductors, and an audience, and it's my job to keep the integrity and interest of the institution in mind, and bring the greatest strengths of each of these individuals together to build something interesting.
